iStock 000015104792XSmallTraveling with a dog is twice the work of traveling alone: Not only do you have to pack for yourself, but you need to pack a doggie backpack for your furry friend. Once you have created a list of items, hold onto it for future use. Store your dog’s travel goods in one place so you can just grab it and go.

1. Food and water dishes

Leave your dog’s ceramic dishes at home where they belong. Pick up some collapsible bowls that are made from waterproof nylon. You can press them down for extra space and put them in your backpack. Just pull them out and fill them up when your dog is thirsty. These are good to have in the car at all times, just in case your dog needs food or water on trips.

2. Dog First Aid Kit

A dog first aid kit contains many of the same products used by humans. The ASPCA makes a good all-inclusive kit for less than $30. Keep it in your trunk for easy access.

3. Dog Cooling Mats & Cargo Liners

If you’re concerned about your dog messing up your car, invest in a waterproof cargo liner designed by Guardian Gear or Solvit for under $100. A cooling mat is great to have on trips where you might have to leave your dog in the car for a few minutes. They can be refrozen any time.

4. Dog Toys & Chews

Dog toys are another necessity. Dogs get bored in the car and whine just like kids. A marrow bone or Kong chew toy filled with peanut butter will give him a couple hours of amusement while you drive in peace. Keep a supply of dog treats just in case he gets cranky.
